Ryuujin assumed a young adult of tall stature and lean muscular build on his human form. He had shoulder-length dark electric blue hair, a chin-length bang on the right of his head that covered his right eye, and golden eyes that faded to orange, almost similar to a sunset sky. He was known to be quiet and had the air of a wise man, rarely smiling unless he was near the people he loved dearly.
Ryuujin wore the standard black Demon Slayer uniform, which consisted of a brown button-up jacket with a stand collar and long sleeves, a white belt around his waist, and tattsuke-hakama pants. Over this, he wore a haori with a red-maroon gradient pattern. Finally, he wore dark blue kyahan, with brown tabi socks and a pair of white zōri with red straps.
When he’s on the Rengoku estate and off duty, some of his dragon traits show up. He had two pairs of horns on each side of his head, and two pale blue streaks appeared on the right side of his hair, which appeared to be longer and fluffier than his human form. He also had a long, powerful dragontail that appeared from the end of his spine, with sharp ridges coming out alongside the top side of the tail and fluffy fur covering the tip, often seen swaying slowly as he smoked on his pipe at the back of the estate. He wore a sky-blue traditional kimono and dark grey haori when he was off duty.

Ryuujin is a quiet, wise, and incredibly intelligent individual. He is also quite a loner when it comes to missions. He often took a solo mission, despite facing higher-ranking demons. Despite his cold exterior, he harbours deep love for humanity and wishes to protect it. This shows through his contract with Rengoku's predecessor, despite there’s no real benefit for Ryuujin. Thanks to his immortality, Ryuujin is incredibly wise. Though his behaviour sometimes could be childish around the people he holds dear, it shows when he’s around Kyojuro, Tengen, and Jia, he can be mischievous at times or even clingy.
Ryuujin are incredibly intelligent and quick to take a decision when needed. When he’s fighting Akaza during the aftermath of Mugen Train, he could quickly deduce the moment he’s arriving on the scene that it’s useless to try and behead Akaza with how fast he could regenerate, and there’s so many civilians nearby that could get injured if he fights the Upper Moon with his full power. Another instance is when Ryuujin went on a solo mission, as there’s a report of a demon that almost took every woman in the village. He could quickly predict that the demon is a lower moon and when they were going to attack again after a couple questions from the villagers.
When he’s off duty, Ryuujin likes to spend his time pipe smoking on the back of Rengoku estate while basking in the sun. He says that it helps with regulating his temperature, as he always has a lower body temperature than normal people. In the winter, Ryuujin is not really active due to his body temperature; at this time, he usually takes a group mission with other Slayers or Kyojuro himself.
He has already lived alongside humans for all eternity; the earliest known account of him entering into a contract with the Rengoku dates before the Heian period; some believe the Rengoku ancestors first encountered the dragon spirit during the Nara period. They were granted permission to remain on the dragon spirit is land in exchange for an offering. The actual offering takes the shape of a human offering. Each generation's firstborn serves as his attendant, essentially centring their lives around the dragon spirit. Beginning on their 17th birthday, the firstborn began his duties, and until their 20th birthday, he was always accompanied by the previous attendant whenever they had to meet the dragon spirit. The prior attendant retired at that point, and the newly born firstborn took up the role of attendant to the dragon spirit. They still need to put the dragon spirit first, but he is kind enough to allow the firstborn to marry humans. It is a well-kept secret among the Rengoku that they have a contract with a dragon spirit, also commonly referred to as a deity. Few people are aware of the terms and conditions of the contract, let alone its existence. For thousands of years, he guarded the Rengoku estate; the Rengoku called him Ryuujin (Kanji: 竜神, 竜: dragon; imperial, 神: gods; mind; soul).
He learnt of a swordsman who taught swordsmen the breathing style around the Sengoku period; this swordsman would later be identified as Yoriichi Tsugikuni. It was through this encounter that he first came into contact with the Demon Slayer Corps outside of the Rengoku. He purposely transforms into a human to investigate the fuss about the swordsman; however, upon discovering the breathing technique Yoriichi taught other swordsmen in, he disregards it as unimportant and moves on.
Within his territory, there are a few wisteria trees. He suggested the Rengoku to plant wisteria trees throughout their estate after observing that demons tended to stay away from areas with these trees, before he was doomed to a deep sleep that would last for hundreds of years. By the time he woke up, it was already the Taisho period. The Rengoku's contract with Ryuujin had already come to the attention of the Ubuyashiki by then. The Ubuyashiki called the dragon spirit to join forces in the fight against the demons as he awoke from his deep sleep. That marks the start of Ryuujin officially becoming a Demon Slayer.
Nobody knows Ryuujin's true name, nor when he’s truly born. His name and birthday were given by the Rengoku to commemorate their contract. Ryuujin name literally meant Dragon God. Funnily enough, Ryuujin was intended to hide his true nature as a dragon spirit outside the Rengoku clan, yet he doesn’t bother to change his name. Despite this, nobody seems to know or realise who he truly is, aside from the Ubuyashiki. His identity as a dragon spirit was revealed to Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu when Ryuujin prevented Akaza from killing Kyojuro, as he shows up in his dragon form. Later on, the trio leaked the information to Tengen, who witnessed Ryuujin's shapeshifting ability to go undercover on the Entertainment District.
There are circling rumours on how many times Ryuujin refused Kagaya's offer to become a Hashira. Some say that he rejected the offer three times before he finally agreed after two Hashira retired. Others say that he refused seven times. No one ever dared to confront Ryuujin to ask about it directly, since the dragon Hashira always looks so scary and strict. Asking Kyojuro also pointless, since the retired Flame Hashira just laughed and told them to ask directly to Ryuujin. However, a person close to him other than Kyojuro finally opens up about this matter; they say that Ryuujin outright says that his refusal isn't because he doesn't want to become a Hashira, but rather because he feels like it isn't fair for others as they work hard to earn the rank. They still have not confirmed how many times Ryuujin refused the offer.
